Happy Friday friends! This week has seemed super short to me for some reason but so excited for the weekend! It’s been about 2 weeks since I visited Skin Pharm for my PRP + microneedling treatment and I’ve gotten tons and tons of questions about everything on Instagram, so I figured I’d first start by telling you about the brand itself. For more info on their Microneedling and PRP treatments: https://skinpharm.com/treatment/prp/ and https://skinpharm.com/treatment/microneedling/
Quick Disclaimers: This is not an ad for Skin Pharm, just a brand I love and want to share with y’all (all opinions are my own) + the products I will talk about in the post are not necessarily the best for you and your skin; just want to give you a glimpse at what has worked for me. I do get a small commission from some links on this post.
Skin Pharm is my all-time one-stop-shop for all things skin care! I found out about them a few years ago from a friend of mine who was a patient at the Nashville location. I accidentally used one of her products (the bottles looked the exact same and I was half asleep…you know how it goes), but the quality of the products were so different than anything I had ever used! Well the rest is history because they recently opened up a location in Atlanta (March 2020) and I am OBSESSED! Since my treatment in July, my Instagram dm’s have been flooded about the treatment I got, about Skin Pharm and so many other things so I formatted this post to answer those questions as well as give y’all a good info dump. It’s gonna be a lil bit long winded so hang with me.
What do they offer?
Skin Pharm has a bunch of different treatments for any and all of your skin needs and they offer medical -grade skin care products. On their website (click here) you can see that you can even filter down your treatment based on your skin’s needs (hydration, smoothing, contouring, clarifying, brightening, etc). If you’re not even sure what your skin needs are: definitely look into either an in-person consult (if you’re in Atlanta, highly recommend Clare Taylor! She is the best! I’m sure any provider is just as great though) or if you’re not near either location (Nashville or Atlanta), they also do phone consults. Highly recommend a skin consult first because you may not even know what your skin needs are and you may even be using the wrong face wash (or even using it too much for your skin *ahem me*).
What treatment did you get?
I got PRP with Microneedling. You can also get it with PRP injections which is great for acne scarring. Be sure to check with your provider on what is best for you. My microneedling this first time wasn’t super deep as it is not a treatment I get regularly. Each time you get it done, it toughens up your skin and it helps build up that collagen level. Benefits: Microneedling helps with collagen production, discoloration, smoothing skin’s texture, and it clarifies and tightens the skin.
So what does PRP even mean? // Do they use your red blood?
I recently went in toward the end of July because they were running a special for $100 off for PRP treatments (heck yes! we love it!) (lemme just help a sister out real quick: August’s special is $100 off filler!) If you don’t know what PRP is, it stands for Platelet Rich Plasma. Even though PRP facials are known as the “vampire facial,” they do not use your red blood. Basically, they take a super small vial of your blood and use it to get PRP.
DISCLAIMER: God did not make me a nurse for a reason (LOL)! I am not good with blood at all and my provider was so nice about it and did not make me feel dumb at all for being squeamish #soappreciated
ANYWAY…once they take your blood, they spin it down in the centrifuge to get this gold liquid (aka Platelet Rich Plasma; PRP) and that is what they use on your face. This process takes about 15ish minutes before your treatment begins. The whole treatment takes about an hour so it is super easy to add into your schedule. The whole office is cute and comfortable (they play some fun music during it too so you’re not just twiddling your thumbs the whole time). I didn’t feel like I was a “patient,” it felt moreso like a spa treatment even though a vial of blood was involved.
What did your skin feel like after?
My skin was red and shiny immediately after and it felt tight later that night. (My face was still numb for a few hours after as they do numb your face prior to your treatment so the most you feel is like small vibrations all over your face). I did not experience any pain or soreness at any point during the recovery process. All I had was some dryness around my mouth and near my jawline. They also send you home with a foaming cleanser and some recovery lotion which will help your recovery time. (They also mix recovery lotion with SPF and give your skin a good layer before you head out). I shared periodic updates on my Instagram if you want to see those.
What was the recovery process like?
My “recovery process” was really only like a day or two of some small patches of dryness before I was able to go back to my normal skin care routine. You can wear make-up after 24 hours of your treatment but I waited until around 48 just since I didn’t have to do a whole lot the next day. If you get them more regularly, the dryness and soreness may be a little more noticeable.
My Updated Skin Routine
I have oily to combo skin and am acne prone. (When I got this done, I had no active acne; just some scarring). I’m also a huge Skin Pharm fan because I didn’t feel like they were just randomly trying to sell me a product that I really didn’t even need. She told me exactly what each product did, how much it cost, and what it would help me with.
AM Routine:
Skin Pharm Gentle Soothing Cleanser, Skin Pharm Clarifying Pads, Neutrogena Hydroboost Water Gel, Skin Pharm Sheer Defense SPF
PM Routine:
Skin Pharm Papaya Enzyme Cleanser, Skin Pharm Clarifying Brightening Polish (every other night as a second cleanse), Skin Pharm Azelaic Acid Rx (this is a brightening ingredient that helps with redness and acne; it’s my build-up product to a retinoid and I started using every other night to build up to nightly use), Neutrogena Hydroboost Water Gel
I also dermaplane at least once a month around the 3rd-ish Sunday with THESE razors and I use Skin Pharm’s Charcoal Mask like 1-2 times every two weeks (this thing is really good for overnight spot treatments too with #mascne).
You can grab all of these products (besides Neutrogena Hydroboost Water Gel which is linked here), at THIS link. Please Note: just because we may have a similar skin type does not mean this routine is what is best for your skin! If there’s one thing I would recommend you try first, it would be Skin Pharm’s Clarifying Pads.
If y’all have any more questions, feel free to comment here, message me on Instagram, or check out my skin + beauty highlight on Instagram for more info on this treatment. I’m not a medical professional whatsoever but I will do my best to answer your questions. Skin Pharm’s Instagram is @skinpharm.co and they share tons of great info there as well.
