One of the most often asked questions in my Instagram dm’s are along the lines of “can you do a hair tutorial?” or “what do you use on your hair?” so I thought I would go ahead and just write up my current routine since I haven’t gotten to a true tutorial or video yet. (I will link everything throughout the post and altogether at the bottom of the post).
// My Hair Type
My hair is naturally oily and super thick! I do wash it pretty consistently and I do not use dry shampoo. Even though dry shampoo is supposed to target oil, it just causes my hair to look greasier so I personally do not use it (plus, Brunettes tend to look grey with it). When I get my hair cut, I usually go every 5-6 months (my hair grows quickly) just to get anything dead or damaged off my ends. I ask for long layered cuts (did I mention my hair is THICK) and small amounts of highlights (usually caramel) with some low light and toner.
// How I Often I Wash + Shower Products I Use
Okay, I feel like I’m going to get some flack for this but I wash my hair EVERY DAY. Every day. If I do go a day it’s never more than one or two tops. I use Biolage Matrix shampoo and conditioner. It smells so good and it’s what my hair dresser uses on it when I go in to get it done. Once to twice a week, I will also do an Olaplex treatment to help treat any breakage or heat damage. Also once every two weeks, I use the Kristin Ess Scalp Purifying Micellar Shampoo to take care of any product build-up on my scalp. When I do this, I tend to pair it with my Drunk Elephant T.L.C. Happi Scalp Scrub (exfoliator) prior to showering. (After my hair appointments, I use the Living Proof Restore Repair Mask).
// Hair Length
My family’s hair just naturally grows quickly while still maintaining strength and I wasn’t sure of any best practices for others so I asked my friend who is also a hairdresser to give me her recommendations.
She told me the biggest thing is to control the amount of heat you put on your hair but if you want to use heat, always, always, always use a heat protectant as it helps keep your hair healthy + damage-free. Also the next piece is to go to a hair stylist you trust and who understands your hair goals (not just the closest Great Clips).
My personal hair dresser has had me since I was around 3 or 4 years old so she’s pretty in-tune with the type of style I want and how I want my highlights to look. When I go, I just ask for a trim and to shape up my layers more than anything.
I also shower at night, put my (damp, towel dried) hair in a silk scrunchie, and then sleep on a silk pillow case. I have noticed such a drastic difference in the health of my hair (+ my skin) just from switching over. In the morning, I just brush out my hair put some heat protectant on blow dry and then I’m usually out the door (unless I want to curl/straighten it).
// Hair Tools
These products I have used for a few years now and I have loved them all! The tools themselves are a little pricey but they do so much better for my hair than any other types I’ve tried. I use this heat protectant before blow drying and styling my hair.
// Products I Love
Below I have linked my favorite shampoo, conditioner, Olaplex treatment steps, hair styling tools, hair bands, and other hair products. Sometimes I use this volumizing spray in the summer if I don’t want my hair to fall flat and I will also use this styling cream from Living Proof if it is warmer out. I have also linked my all time favorite hair spray! I have tried several different brands of hair spray and I love that my hair never feels crunchy or stiff but my curls stay all day whenever I use it! (I use the orange Flexible Hold one).
If you have any questions about any of the products or anything I haven’t covered, feel free to leave a comment or message me on Instagram and I will be happy to get back with ya! xx
